Abstract

The article analyzes the issue of indigenous languages and linguistic pluralism in the project for a new constitution for Chile, rejected by a wide margin on September 4, 2022. The proposed regulations were part of a broader set of measures linked to plurinationality , which were among those that aroused the greatest questioning by the public. We will address in detail the norms related to indigenous languages contained in the constitutional project, to later examine their conditions of possibility according to their sociolinguistic situation and with the state linguistic policies towards indigenous languages. We conclude by pointing out that multilingual policies favorable to the revitalization of indigenous languages could only be successful if they are actively promoted by the indigenous-speaking community itself, with the support of civil society and the State.
