Abstract

In this study we propose the analysis of a French vagueness marker, style, similar to the marker genre but which has lost presence in discourse in recent years. We will first propose a distributional and syntactic study of the marker before moving on to a semantic study. We will argue that there has been a pragmaticalisation of the noun style to give rise to a marker that is increasingly desemantised. In a final part, we will compare the marker style with its Spanish equivalents, en plan, tipo or rollo.
