Disambiguation of Anaphoric Presuppositions
The Case of ‘Also’
Keywords:
anaphora, indexicals, parametric predication, presupposition, reference, perspectiveAbstract
The objective of this research is to analyze the disambiguation patterns of presuppositions that can be considered anaphoric and generated by the use of indexical particles. In contrast to recent theories about the presupposition which privileges lexical information, we propose a perspectival analysis of the presupposition, where the default inference about this type of information makes use of the speaker’s perspective. In two studies we explore the disambiguation pattern of sentences that contain the word ‘also’ in contexts where the indexical ‘I’ is used. The results support our hypothesis and are discussed considering the main theories about presupposition and anaphora. Based on said results, we suggest some future research directions.
