Abstract

This paper carries on a comparative analysis of two mitigators, casi que (‘almost that’) and casi (‘almost’). In order to achieve this goal, we have assumed the description of casi proposed by Pons and Schwenter (2011), who establish the interpretations of this adverb. The analysis of several oral copora shows that there is dialectal variation regarding the functions of casi que. Whereas in Venezuelan Spanish casi que has the same interpretations that casi has, in European Spanish casi que can be used in a more reduced number of contexts.
