Abstract

The meaning that prepositions provide can be observed from a distributional perspective, that is, what kind of semantic elements precede and follow a linguistic element and how that context determines their meaning. One of the objectives of our research was the semantic classification of a set of nouns used with prepositions in Spanish, using the entropy value obtained from the Information Theory (Shanonn, 1948). We assume that the prepositions’ semantic values are organized into classes: functional, semi-functional, semi-lexical, and lexical. Once the nouns are classified, we will examine the entropy of the prepositional classes to which they belong (the observation will be carried out for three of these groups). In this way, we will justify our hypothesis concerning the semantic similarity degree for these prepositional groups.
