Abstract

This contrastive study analyses the combinatorial profile of schreiben and escribir in their different meanings, with the aim of providing useful data for teaching and learning. Based on a comparable multilingual corpus of four text types, the analysis employs a model that integrates lexicological parameters at the syntax-semantics interface. The patterns identified from the documented argument structures function as a tertium comparationis and are related to different conceptual frameworks. The study addresses current challenges in applied linguistics, especially in pedagogical lexicography and lexical competence in the learning of German and Spanish as foreign languages.

Author Biographies

Mario Franco Barros, Universidade da Madeira

Mario Franco Barros is an Assistant Professor with Permanent Appointment at the University of Madeira, Portugal. After graduating in 1996 with a degree in German Philology from the University of Santiago de Compostela, he has been working as a lecturer at the University of Madeira since 1999. In 2008, he completed his doctorate on the topic ‘New Media and Text: Private Letters and Private E-mails in Comparison’ (Neue Medien und Text: Privatbrief und private E-Mail im Vergleich). His main areas of research are German as a foreign language (DaF - Deutsch als Fremdsprache), language in digital communication, spoken language, and lexicography.

Meike Meliss, Universidad de Santiago de Compostela

MEIKE MELISS holds a degree in Modern/German Philology from the UCM (1988) and a PhD in German Philology from the same university (2002). Since 2007, she has been a tenured professor of German Philology: German Grammar and Linguistics at the University of Santiago de Compostela. She is a researcher with the Humboldt Research Group (GI-1920) at the USC, with regional funding since 2012, and an associate member of the Institute for Linguistic and Literary Research (iLTIUS). Her research focuses on the following areas: lexicography, lexicology, semantic-syntactic interface, valency grammar, contrastive linguistics, corpus linguistics, textual linguistics and interactional linguistics, linguistics applied to the fields of DaF and Ele, ICTs.
He has participated in various research projects with regional (Xunta de Galicia), national (Spain) and international (Germany) funding. Since 2015, he has been the principal investigator of four research projects in competitive national and international inter-university, multidisciplinary and highly internationalised competitions (CLAVDAP-MULTLEX: 2025-2028, COMBIDIGILEX: 2015-2019, LeGeDe: 2016-2019, DICONALE-online: 2013-2016). Of particular note is the LeGeDe project, which he led for three years at the Department of Lexicology at the IDS in Mannheim (Germany).

The results of the research projects in which she has participated include the publication of six books, more than 20 articles in high-impact scientific journals, more than 30 book chapters in indexed publications, and numerous contributions to the proceedings of national and international conferences.
She has given seminars and lectures as a visiting professor at various European universities and taught seminars on German linguistics at the University of Mannheim for two semesters (2017, 2018). She has supervised three doctoral theses in the field of lexicology. She has also been the principal investigator for several international conferences held at the USC and the IDS in Mannheim (2002, 2006, 2012, 2017), partly funded by external grants (DAAD) and bilateral agreements (DFG).
In addition, she is the coordinator of various ERASMUS+ programmes at the Faculty of Philology at the USC, an external evaluator for the DAAD in Spain and the FWF (Austria), co-editor of a publishing series (SkodiS: Narr SPIQ2), a member of the scientific committee (external) of various philological journals, and a regular contributor as a member of the scientific committee of international conferences. She also acts as an expert on state commissions of the State Research Agency and is coordinator of the German language committee of the CRUE.
